The panic string contains key information regarding the crash. Several panic string types exist. The content

of the string appears in english text. In the above output, SRESET refers to a loss of communication

between CP and RP. The CP assumes the RP kernel is hung and forces the RP into a reset state.

Line card core dumps

Line card application and kernel core dumps are enabled by default. Line card kernel core dumps require

that the line card have an internal compact flash present. The internal compact flash is partitioned so that

one partition uses is available for the full core dump and a partition is available for the mini core dump.

Full core dumps

When a line card kernel or application crashes, all related debug contents of the line card are dumped to the

internal compact flash’s partition, then the line card reboots. After the line card boots up, it recognizes that

a valid kernel core is present in the compact flash partition and starts an FTP process that transfers the core

dump to the primary RPM flash's CORE_DUMP_DIR directory.

line card core dumps are located in the CORE_DUMP_DIR directory with file names

f10lp[0-13].kcore.gz

(for the kernel) or

f10lp[0-13]<yymmddhhmmss>.acore.gz (

for the application).

After successful completion of the FTP from compact flash partition to RPM flash, the header info is

changed to mark the core dump process as complete. The header information is changed is to avoid

confusion in the case of another kernel crash.

The full line card core dump takes approximately 5 to10 minutes to upload the line card full core dump

from compact flash partition to memory on the RPM (approximately 5 minutes to dump to compact flash

partition and approximately 5 minutes after the line card resets to FTP to the RPM flash). During this time,

the physical interfaces remain in their current state, which is normally operationally up. This assumes

allows FTOS agent tasks running on the LP continue to operate correctly and maximize uptime by having

packets continue to flow while FTOS writes the core dump.
