Configuration Section 3 Field Operation Mode: (continued) Firewall: (ADVANCED) Description • Dynamically assigning IP addresses to devices on your local network, simplifying network set-up, using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). This is the WA840's built-in local area network DHCP server (which is configured on the LAN Page). • Routing and/or filtering data based on the protocol used and/or its content, protecting your broadband connection and your local network from undesired access. This is the WA840's built-in firewall (which can be configured with specific filters on the FILTERS Page, and with specific routing "rules" on the ROUTING Page). If all of these router functions are disabled, the WA840 simply operates as a wireless access point with the router functions disabled, all WA840 configuration options that use the IP addresses of local network devices are disabled (with any entries into those fields ignored). However, all WA840 configuration options that use Media Access Control (MAC) addresses of local network devices - physical addresses uniquely assigned by manufacturers to any network device -- are still available. • Selecting Router enables router functions. • Selecting Access Point disables router functions. NOTE: If you wish to enable some router functions and not all, select Router and then disable specific router functions via their respective configuration options that follow. For example, if you wish to use the firewall, but have no need for the DHCP server, select Router here and then disable DHCP Server on the LAN Page. FACTORY DEFAULT: Access Point Enables the built-in firewall, to protect your Access Point and local network from unauthorized access from the Internet. • Selecting Enabled engages the built-in firewall. • Selecting Disabled disengages the built-in firewall. NOTE: It is recommended that the firewall be disabled only if you are using alternative firewall protection software.
