Chapter 2 Loading Documents Precautions The following types of documents may not be scanned successfully: • Documents of non-uniform thickness (e.g., envelopes and photo-attached documents) • Wrinkled or curled documents • Folded or torn documents • Tracing paper • Coated paper • Carbon paper • Photosensitive paper • Perforated documents • Documents that are not square or rectangular • Very thin documents • Photographs (Photographic paper) You must not scan the following types of documents: • Paper-clipped or stapled documents • Documents on which the ink is still wet • Documents smaller than A8 size • Documents wider than A3 size (297 mm or 11.69 in.) • Documents other than paper such as fabric, metal foil, or transparencies • Important documents such as certificates and cash vouch- ers that must not get scratched or become smeared • When scanning a semi-transparent document, slide the [Brightness] bar to light to avoid bleed through. • To prevent the rollers from becoming dirty, avoid scanning documents containing large areas written or filled with pencil. • When using the ADF, the leading edge of all document sheets must be evenly aligned. Make sure that curling at the leading edge is within the following tolerances: More than 30 mm (1.18 in.) Feeding direction Less than 3 mm (0.12 in.) Top of the paper Read surface More than 30 mm (1.18 in.)Feeding direction Less than 5 mm (0.20 in.) Top of the paper Read surface ʂ • Carbonless paper contains chemical substances that may harm the Brake Rollers or paper-feeding rollers (e.g. Pick Rollers) when documents are fed. Pay attention to the following: Cleaning : If document jams occur frequently, clean the Brake Rollers and the Pick Rollers. For how to clean the Brake and Pick Rollers, refer to "Chapter 6 Daily Care" (on page 114). Replacing parts : The service life of the Brake Rollers and the Pick Rollers for scanning "carbonless paper" may be shorter than that for scanning "wood containing paper." • The service life of the Brake Rollers and the Pick Rollers for scanning "wood containing paper" may become shorter than that for scanning "woodfree paper." • The Brake Rollers or Pick Rollers could be damaged if any photos or sticky notes on your document have contact with the Brake Rollers or Pick Rollers during scanning. • Scanning documents of calendered paper, such as photos, may damage their surface.
