PART 7 USING MS-DOS 7.6.2 File Names When you want to put data or a program into a file on your disk, you must give a name to the file. Some examples of file names are: BUDGET BUDGET.2Q PROGLTXT A file's name takes either of the following forms. PPPPPPPP or pppppppp.sss pppppppp represents the file name and .sss is a file name extension. File names are 1 to 8 characters long. A file name extension starts with a period, has three characters or less, and follows immediately after the file name. The characters in a file name can be alphanumerics, and Symbols such as $, #, 8c {, }, , and '. MS-DOS treats all letters as capital letters. If a file name is followed by an extension, you must use both parts to specify that file. 7-21
