CHAPTER 6 WAN Setup 6.1 Overview This chapter describes how to configure WAN settings from the WAN screens. Use these screens to configure your ZyXEL Device for Internet access. A WAN (Wide Area Network) connection is an outside connection to another network or the Internet. It connects your private networks (such as a LAN (Local Area Network) and other networks, so that a computer in one location can communicate with computers in other locations. Figure 27 LAN and WAN LAN WAN 6.1.1 What You Can Do in the WAN Screens • Use the Internet Access Setup screen (Section 6.2 on page 95) to configure the WAN settings on the ZyXEL Device for Internet access. • Use the More Connections screen (Section 6.3 on page 100) to set up additional Internet access connections. 6.1.2 What You Need to Know About WAN Encapsulation Method Encapsulation is used to include data from an upper layer protocol into a lower layer protocol. To set up a WAN connection to the Internet, you need to use the same encapsulation method used by your ISP (Internet Service Provider). If your ISP offers a dial-up Internet connection using PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) or PPPoA, they should also provide a username and password (and service name) for user authentication. WAN IP Address The WAN IP address is an IP address for the ZyXEL Device, which makes it accessible from an outside network. It is used by the ZyXEL Device to communicate with other devices in other ADSL Router Series User's Guide 93
