Proxy Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) This section describes the Proxy Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) feature. Overview • Proxy ARP allows a router to answer ARP requests where the target IP address is not the router itself but a destination that the router can reach. • If a host does not know the default gateway, proxy ARP can learn the first hop. • Machines in one physical network appear to be part of another logical network. • Without proxy ARP, a router responds to an ARP request only if the target IP address is an address configured on the interface where the ARP request arrived. CLI Examples The following are examples of the commands used in the proxy ARP feature. Example #1: Enabling Proxy ARP To enable IP Proxy ARP: console#config console(config)#interface vlan 10 console(config-if-vlan10)#routing console(config-if-vlan10)#ip proxy-arp console(config-if-vlan10)#exit Example #2 Viewing the Interface Information console#show ip interface vlan 50 Routing Configuration 73
