191 Managing Your Tecra 8000 Series Computer System management personnel must examine systems at the component level, addressing, for example, queries as to which components are most utilized and, thus, most likely to give out. Out of 500 hard disk drives, how many are fragmented? How many are over 80 percent full? The Tecra 8000 Series offers two features that help the IT administrator handle inventory management. First, it provides automatic recognition and recording of the serial numbers of the computer and key components, including hard disk drives, batteries and the Network Dock. This is reported via DMI and available to all applications. Second, the Tecra's BIOS asset tagging feature allows the client or IT administrator to store their own asset tag with a unique custom-generated identification number that is written to FLASH memory after purchase. This can be accomplished remotely through LDCM or another DMIcompliant application. The Tecra 8000 Series SecureSleep™ function enhances inventory and fault management after hours by allowing the IT administrator to access the computer remotely via the LAN connection. While SecureSleep is much like Wake-on-LAN, it offers the additional feature of preventing non-secure keystrokes to the keyboard while the system is powered up. Configuration management Asset management is more than inventory control, however. It includes managing the upgrade and configuration of system software. Another feature of LDCM is that the application takes periodic snapshots of critical configurations. An administrator's console enables network personnel to unobtrusively view each PC workstation's status. With security set to full access, technicians can transfer files and remotely reboot the client workstation, as necessary.
