250 Glossary modem: A device for transmitting computer information over telephone lines. A modem converts (modulates) digital information for transmission and also converts (demodulates) information it receives back to digital format. Many modems also interpret and execute commands received from the computer. monitor: An external device that uses rows and columns of pixels to display alphanumeric characters or graphical images. A cathode ray tube (CRT) is a common type of monitor. motherboard: The main printed circuit board in the computer. It contains the processor chip, memory and other major system components. Sometimes called the main board. multimedia: A combination of two or more elements, such as sound, animation and video in a computer program or presentation. Multimedia programs, which require huge amounts of storage space, have become very popular with the wide availability of CD-ROM drives. multitasking: A technique in which the computer runs one program for a short time and then switches to the next program. Because people's sense of time is much slower than the computer's speed, the programs seem to run simultaneously. N network: A collection of interconnected, individually controlled computers, together with the hardware and software used to connect them. A network allows you to share data and peripheral devices, such as printers, with other users and to exchange electronic mail. non-interlaced: A method of refreshing a computer screen, in which each pixel of every line is refreshed as the electron beam scans across and down the screen. non-system disk: A disk for storing programs and data that cannot be used to start the computer. See system disk. non-volatile memory: Memory that retains data in the absence of an external power source. numeric keypad overlay: A feature that allows you to use certain keys on the keyboard to enter numbers and to control cursor movement. O off line: Not currently connected to or under the control of the computer. Used to refer to equipment such as disk drives and printers. Part III: Appendixes
