Light path LED errors Before replacing any FRU: 1. Observe LEDs on boards. 2. View system-error log. Note: See Chapter 7, "Parts listing, Types 8861, 8862," on page 139 to determine which components are replaceable by the customer and which components must be replaced by an IBM field service technician. Light path LED FRU/action All LEDs off (error log full) 1. System-Error log is 75% full; analyze the log entries to determine the Note: "Information" LED may be lit. nature of the error messages. 2. Save and/or clear the log. 3. For a PFA alert, check error log for failures. 4. To clear a PFA alert; remove ac power for at least 20 seconds; then, reconnect and power up system. PS1 1. Power supply 1 2. Power backplane PS2 1. Power supply 2 2. Power backplane TEMP (temperature too high) 1. Check the following LEDs: a. If a fan LED is on, replace the fan. b. If a power supply fan LED is on, replace the power supply. 2. Ambient temperature must be within normal operating specifications. See "Features and specifications" on page 3 3. Examine System Error log. a. System over recommended temperature b. DASD over recommended temperature 1) Overheating hard disk drive 2) DASD backplane c. Microprocessor x over recommended temperature (where x is microprocessor number) 1) Reseat microprocessor x and heat sink. 2) Microprocessor x. d. Power supply fault / over temp v Failing power supply e. Operator information panel FAN (fan failure) Note: A failing fan can also cause the OVER TEMP and DASD LEDs to be on. 1. Check the following LEDs: a. If an individual fan LED is on, replace the fan. b. If an individual power supply fan LED is on, replace the power supply. 2. Microprocessor tray assembly. VRM (VRM failure) 1. Check event log to determine location of failing LED (VRM). 2. VRM 3-4. 3. Microprocessor tray assembly. Chapter 6. Symptom-to-FRU index 93
