• Kernel-2.4.18-17.7.x.i686.rpm may be found on the Web at ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/Red Hat/linux/updates/7.3/en/os/i686/kernel-2.4.1818.7.x.i686.rpm 1. To update the kernel, press Ctrl-Alt-F2. 2. Insert the media containing the updated modutils (2.4.18-3.7) and kernel (2.4.1817) rpms. If on a CD-ROM, mount the CD-ROM using: mount /dev/cdrom. 3. Use command rpm -Uvh modutils-2.4.18-3.7x.i386.rpm to update the modutils. The modutils package must be updated first in order to add the new kernel. 4. Use the command rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.18-17.7.x.i686.rpm to add the kernel to the Red Hat 7.3 installation. 5. Using an editor such as vi, add the following into /etc/lilo.conf: Image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-17.7.x label=linux-2.4.18-17 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.18-17.7.x.img read-only root=/dev/hda3 6. Change the "default=..." line to default=linux-2.4.18-17. This will make the 2.4.18-17 kernel load by default. 7. Save your changes. 8. Run lilo -v. 9. Reboot the server. Section 2. Change the "default=

Save your changes.

Run lilo -v.

Reboot the server.
