System Board Illustration The system board, also called the planar or motherboard, is the main circuit board in your server. It provides basic server functions and supports a variety of devices that are preinstalled or that you can install later. Some configuration actions are controlled through jumpers on the system board, whereas other actions are controlled through switches. The following sections discuss the jumper and switch settings that you can change. If you plan to install, remove, or replace hardware in your server, or if you must set jumpers and switches, you will need to know the layout of the system board. The following illustration shows the layout of the system board in your server. The numbered pointers show the components that are discussed in this book. 1 5 V auxiliary power connector 2 Primary microprocessor socket 3 Power switch connector 4 Secondary microprocessor socket 5 DIMM sockets (memory connectors) 6 Secondary IDE connector 7 Diskette drive connector 8 Primary IDE connector 9 Channel A SCSI connector (68 pin) 1 Channel B SCSI connector (50 pin) 11 Channel B SCSI connector (68 pin) 12 Clear CMOS Request (password) jumper (J7E1) 13 Rocker switches 14 Battery 15 RAIDport connector 16 ISA slot connectors 17 PCI slot connectors 18 AGP slot connector Chapter 7.
