problem, resolution

Page 163 highlights

Boot problem resolution Depending on the boot device, a checkpoint may be displayed on the console for an extended period of time while the boot image is retrieved from the device. This is particularly true for CD-ROM and network boot attempts. When booting from the CD-ROM, watch for activity on the drive's LED indicator. A blinking LED indicates that the loading of either (a) the boot image, or (b) additional information required by the operating system being booted, is still in progress. If the checkpoint is displayed for an extended period of time and the drive LED is not indicating any activity, there might be a problem loading the boot image from the device. Note: For network boot attempts, if the system is not connected to an active network, or if there is no server configured to respond to the system's boot request, the system will still attempt to boot. Because time-out durations are necessarily long to accommodate retries, the system may appear to be hung. If you suspect a problem loading the boot image, complete the following steps: 001 Verify that your bootlist is correct. 1. From the BladeCenter management module (MM) menu, select the boot list menu for your system: Blade Tasks > Configuration > Boot Sequence 2. Find your server on the list that is displayed and verify that the device from which you are attempting to boot is the first device in the boot sequence. If it is not, select your server from the list of servers and modify the boot sequence on the select boot sequence menu. Cycle power on your server to retry the boot. Note: If Network is selected, the server will try to boot from both Ethernet ports on the system board. 3. If this boot attempt fails, do the following: a. If attempting to boot from the network go to Step 002 . b. If attempting to boot from the CD-ROM go to Step 003 . c. If attempting to boot from an IDE disk go to Step 004 . 002 If you are attempting to boot from the network: 1. Verify that the network cabling to the BladeCenter network switch is correct. 2. Check with the network administrator to make sure that the network is up. 3. Verify that the server for your system is running and configured to respond to your system. 4. Turn the server power off, then turn it on and retry the boot operation. 5. If the boot still fails, replace the system board. 003 If you are attempting to boot from the CD drive: 1. From BladeCenter management module Blade Tasks menu, verify that the media tray is assigned to your server. 2. Turn the server power off, then turn it on and retry the boot operation. 3. If the boot fails, try a known good boot CD. 4. If possible, try to boot another JS20 server in the BladeCenter unit to verify that the CD-ROM is functional. Chapter 10. Symptom-to-FRU index 153

Boot
problem
resolution
Depending
on
the
boot
device,
a
checkpoint
may
be
displayed
on
the
console
for
an
extended
period
of
time
while
the
boot
image
is
retrieved
from
the
device.
This
is
particularly
true
for
CD-ROM
and
network
boot
attempts.
When
booting
from
the
CD-ROM,
watch
for
activity
on
the
drive’s
LED
indicator.
A
blinking
LED
indicates
that
the
loading
of
either
(a)
the
boot
image,
or
(b)
additional
information
required
by
the
operating
system
being
booted,
is
still
in
progress.
If
the
checkpoint
is
displayed
for
an
extended
period
of
time
and
the
drive
LED
is
not
indicating
any
activity,
there
might
be
a
problem
loading
the
boot
image
from
the
device.
Note:
For
network
boot
attempts,
if
the
system
is
not
connected
to
an
active
network,
or
if
there
is
no
server
configured
to
respond
to
the
system’s
boot
request,
the
system
will
still
attempt
to
boot.
Because
time-out
durations
are
necessarily
long
to
accommodate
retries,
the
system
may
appear
to
be
hung.
If
you
suspect
a
problem
loading
the
boot
image,
complete
the
following
steps:
±001²
Verify
that
your
bootlist
is
correct.
1.
From
the
BladeCenter
management
module
(MM)
menu,
select
the
boot
list
menu
for
your
system:
Blade
Tasks
>
Configuration
>
Boot
Sequence
2.
Find
your
server
on
the
list
that
is
displayed
and
verify
that
the
device
from
which
you
are
attempting
to
boot
is
the
first
device
in
the
boot
sequence.
If
it
is
not,
select
your
server
from
the
list
of
servers
and
modify
the
boot
sequence
on
the
select
boot
sequence
menu.
Cycle
power
on
your
server
to
retry
the
boot.
Note:
If
Network
is
selected,
the
server
will
try
to
boot
from
both
Ethernet
ports
on
the
system
board.
3.
If
this
boot
attempt
fails,
do
the
following:
a.
If
attempting
to
boot
from
the
network
go
to
Step
±002²
.
b.
If
attempting
to
boot
from
the
CD-ROM
go
to
Step
±003²
.
c.
If
attempting
to
boot
from
an
IDE
disk
go
to
Step
±004²
.
±002²
If
you
are
attempting
to
boot
from
the
network:
1.
Verify
that
the
network
cabling
to
the
BladeCenter
network
switch
is
correct.
2.
Check
with
the
network
administrator
to
make
sure
that
the
network
is
up.
3.
Verify
that
the
server
for
your
system
is
running
and
configured
to
respond
to
your
system.
4.
Turn
the
server
power
off,
then
turn
it
on
and
retry
the
boot
operation.
5.
If
the
boot
still
fails,
replace
the
system
board.
±003²
If
you
are
attempting
to
boot
from
the
CD
drive:
1.
From
BladeCenter
management
module
Blade
Tasks
menu,
verify
that
the
media
tray
is
assigned
to
your
server.
2.
Turn
the
server
power
off,
then
turn
it
on
and
retry
the
boot
operation.
3.
If
the
boot
fails,
try
a
known
good
boot
CD.
4.
If
possible,
try
to
boot
another
JS20
server
in
the
BladeCenter
unit
to
verify
that
the
CD-ROM
is
functional.
