Hardware Features Using a modem 45 Using a modem If you have a modem, you may have an internal modem or a PC Card modem. This section provides information on the internal modem. A modem allows you to: ❖ Access a bulletin board service (BBS) or the Internet. ❖ Communicate with your office's local area network (LAN), or a larger corporate wide area network (WAN). For specific information about connecting to a LAN or WAN, consult your network administrator. ❖ Use the teleconferencing feature with a video camera. ❖ Send a fax directly from your computer. TECHNICAL NOTE: Windows 98 does not support fax capability. Connecting to a telephone line with an internal modem Before you can communicate using the modem, you need to connect it to a telephone line. Your computer's built-in modem provides a RJ-11 and connector, allowing you to connect to a standard voice-grade telephone line.
