Understanding the ADF and scanner glass ADF Scanner glass Use the ADF for multiple-page documents. Use the scanner glass for single pages, small items (such as postcards or photos), transparencies, photo paper, or thin media (such as magazine clippings). You can use the ADF or the scanner glass to scan documents. Using the ADF The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) can scan multiple pages including duplex pages. When using the ADF: • Load the document into the ADF faceup, short edge first. • Load up to 75 sheets of plain paper in the ADF input tray. • Scan sizes from 114.0 x 139.4 mm (4.5 x 5.5 in.) to 297.18 x 431.8 mm (11.7 x 17 in.). • Scan documents with mixed page sizes (letter and legal). • Scan media weights from 52 to 120 g/m2 (14 to 32 lb). • Do not load postcards, photos, small items, transparencies, photo paper, or thin media (such as magazine clippings) into the ADF. Place these items on the scanner glass. Using the scanner glass The scanner glass (flatbed) can be used to scan or copy single pages or book pages. When using the scanner glass: • Place a document facedown on the scanner glass in the upper left corner. • Scan or copy documents up to 215.9 x 355.6 mm (8.5 x 14 in.). • Copy books up to 25.3 mm (1 in.) thick. 18
