Mussels Fresh Steam Cooking ,Only prepare closed mussels. Do not eat mussels that have not opened after being cooked. Danger of food poisoning. Soak fresh mussels in water for a few hours before cooking to rinse out any sand. Then scrub the mussels thoroughly and remove beards. Frozen Defrost frozen mussels before cooking. Cooking duration The longer mussels are cooked, the tougher they become. Use the cooking times given in the table.
