You can shorten the RENAME command to REN. To change the name of a file from HAMMERS to WRENCHES, therefore, you can type the following and press Enter: REN HAMMERS WRENCHES You can use wildcards to rename groups of files. For example, to change just the extensions of all files on drive A with the extension .NEW to .OLD, type the following and press Enter: REN A:*.NEW *.OLD To add the extension .OLD to all files that begin with the same five characters, MEMOS, but end with one varying character, type the following and press Enter: REN MEMOS? MEMOS?.OLD This command would rename files such as MEMOS1 and MEMOS2 to MEMOS1.OLD and MEMOS2,OLD.
