CHAPTER 2 a. Pick-up mechanism The printer raises the lifter and lowers the cassette pick-up roller to the paper surface enabling it to pick up paper. When either the upper or lower cassette is installed in the printer, the upper or lower lifter gear is engaged into drive gear, so that the lifter can be raised. The cassette pick-up roller shaft is unlocked so the pick-up roller can be lowered. When the cassette feed solenoid (SL1) turns on, the main motor (MT1) drives the upper or lower lifter to raise the paper in the cassette. The MT1 power is transmitted to the cassette pickup roller lowering cam in order to lower the cassette pick-up roller to the paper surface so that one sheet can be fed. The lifter is not raised until the surface of the paper in the cassette drops to a certain level. When the paper surface reaches that certain level, the pick-up roller shaft moves down to release the cam and raise the lifter again.
