● JPEG A file format used for compressing and saving color images. The compression ratio can be selected, but the higher the compression ratio, the poorer the quality of the expanded image. Widely used on the Internet and by painting applications for PCs. ● LAN (Local Area Network) A network that interconnects devices located within a limited area. ● MPEG A file format for compressing video files that allows files containing digital video and audio to be transferred efficiently. ● NTSC (National Television System Committee) The TV format used in Japan and the U.S. ● PAL (Phase Alternation by Line) The TV format used in most European countries, including Britain and Germany. ● PictBridge A communications standard for printing images via a direct printer connection. This allows devices to print by connecting directly to a PictBridge-compatible printer via a USB cable. In addition to allowing settings such as the number of prints to be specified on a digital camera, PictBridge can be used for a range of functions. ● Red-eye effect An effect in which the pupils of people's eyes appear bright red in shots taken in dark situations using a flash. The effect is caused by the light of the flash reflecting off the inside of the eye. ● Router A relay device that interconnects differing networks. ● Smear An effect that causes vertical strips of light to appear in pictures taken with cameras that use CCDs where the subject include a bright light source. ● Subnet mask A number that further specifies the IP address of a device connected to a router to enhance network performance. ● White balance A function that adjusts the color balance according to the color of the ambient light around the subject so that white subjects appear white in the photographed image.
