Polyphonic Aftertouch, Punch-in Record

Page 339 highlights

12. Glossary Phrase An individual instrumental "part" which can be used in a pattern: a drum pattern, bass line, or chord part. Phrase Sampling The act of sampling an entire musical or rhythmic phrase, as opposed to recording a one-shot sample such as a single snare hit. Pitch EG An envelope generator that can be used to control the pitch of a voice from the note attack until the final release. Pitched Voice A voice which plays at the standard pitches of each key on the keyboard. Pitched voices allow samples to be played at various pitches or various pitches to be played simultaneously to create chords, just like conventional instruments. Polyphonic Aftertouch Aftertouch refers to the capability to control some aspect of the sound by varying pressure on the keyboard after notes are played. Two types of aftertouch data are used: polyphonic and channel. Channel aftertouch is aftertouch data in which only one aftertouch value is transmitted for each MIDI channel. In contrast, polyphonic aftertouch produces separate aftertouch values for each note played. Polyphony The number of notes that can be played simultaneously by a tone generator or instrument. The maximum polyphony of the RS7000 is 62 notes. Portamento An effect that smoothly changes the pitch from one note to another note. Higher Portamento Time values will produce a slower change, and there will be no effect with a setting of 0. Portamento Switch MIDI control change number 65 turns the portamento effect on or off. Preset An item provided in the internal memory. In the RS7000 a substantial number of phrases are provided as presets. Punch-in Record A method of realtime recording in which the user specifies the punch-in and punch-out points, so that recording takes place only in that area. Q Q (Bandwidth) An equalizer parameter used in band-pass or bandelimination type filters. The "Q" is the bandwidth, or the range of frequencies affected by the filter. The higher the Q, the broader the affected band. Quantize A function which can be used to "tighten up" the inexact timing of notes or other events that were entered in realtime. R RAM Random Access Memory than can be written to, read from, and erased as required. The RS7000 uses internal RAM memory. Real-time Recording A method of recording in which a performance is recorded as it is played in real time, similar to a conventional multi-track recorder. Redo A function which "redoes" (restores) the results of a function which has been undone by using the "Undo" function. Replace A method of real-time recording or punch recording in which previously recorded data is erased (replaced) as new material is recorded. Appendix RS7000 339

12. Glossary
Appendix
Phrase
An individual instrumental
part
which can be used in a
pattern: a drum pattern, bass line, or chord part.
Phrase Sampling
The act of sampling an entire musical or rhythmic
phrase, as opposed to recording a one-shot sample
such as a single snare hit.
Pitch EG
An envelope generator that can be used to control the
pitch of a voice from the note attack until the
nal
release.
Pitched Voice
A voice which plays at the standard pitches of each key
on the keyboard. Pitched voices allow samples to be
played at various pitches or various pitches to be played
simultaneously to create chords, just like conventional
instruments.
Polyphonic Aftertouch
Aftertouch refers to the capability to control some
aspect of the sound by varying pressure on the key-
board after notes are played. Two types of aftertouch
data are used: polyphonic and channel. Channel after-
touch is aftertouch data in which only one aftertouch
value is transmitted for each MIDI channel. In contrast,
polyphonic aftertouch produces separate aftertouch
values for each note played.
Polyphony
The number of notes that can be played simultaneously
by a tone generator or instrument. The maximum
polyphony of the RS7000 is 62 notes.
Portamento
An effect that smoothly changes the pitch from one note
to another note. Higher Portamento Time values will
produce a slower change, and there will be no effect
with a setting of 0.
Portamento Switch
MIDI control change number 65 turns the portamento
effect on or off.
Preset
An item provided in the internal memory. In the RS7000
a substantial number of phrases are provided as pre-
sets.
Punch-in Record
A method of realtime recording in which the user speci-
es the punch-in and punch-out points, so that record-
ing takes place only in that area.
Q
Q (Bandwidth)
An equalizer parameter used in band-pass or band-
elimination type
lters. The
Q
is the bandwidth, or the
range of frequencies affected by the
lter. The higher
the Q, the broader the affected band.
Quantize
A function which can be used to
tighten up
the inexact
timing of notes or other events that were entered in real-
time.
R
RAM
Random Access Memory than can be written to, read
from, and erased as required. The RS7000 uses inter-
nal RAM memory.
Real-time Recording
A method of recording in which a performance is
recorded as it is played in real time, similar to a conven-
tional multi-track recorder.
Redo
A function which
redoes
(restores) the results of a
function which has been undone by using the
Undo
function.
Replace
A method of real-time recording or punch recording in
which previously recorded data is erased (replaced) as
new material is recorded.
