Introduction to iSCSI and IPSANs A more useful IPSAN might have several servers/iSCSI initiators and several storage enclosures/iSCSI targets, as shown in the Figure below. iSCSI Stations LAN Server Server Server iSCSI Initiators (Email servers, file servers) Storage Enclosure IPSAN Storage Enclosure Storage Enclosure iSCSI Targets In the network environment shown in the Figure above, the available storage can be balanced between the three servers, with storage easily expanded for a particular server. What is WMI? Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is the Microsoft implementation of Web Based Enterprise Management (WBEM), which is a standard for accessing and sharing management information. Software developers use WMI as a kind of "shortcut" when creating software functions, referring to the WMI code instead of creating new code. Without WMI support, automated features of the Adaptec Storage Manager software will not work on your computer and will have to be performed manually. 2-6
