Building Your IPSAN Building Your IPSAN (With WMI) If your system has WMI, the automated features of Adaptec Storage Manager are supported. Follow the instructions in this section to build your IPSAN. Prerequisites ■ Windows 2003 or Windows 2000 SP3 ■ Microsoft iSCSI Service ■ DiskPart (most up-to-date version available) Set-up Task List Complete these tasks, in order: 1 Decide on the type of volume you want to create. (See Understanding Volume Types and Storage Pools below.) 2 Add a storage pool to the iSCSI subsystem. (See page 4-5.) 3 Create a volume. (See page 4-7.) 4 Create and configure spares. (See page 4-13.) Understanding Volume Types and Storage Pools Before you begin, you must understand how volume types and storage pools relate to each other. A storage pool is a disk drive or collection of disk drives combined in a RAID set. A volume is created using space available within a storage pool. Therefore, the type of volume you want to create determines the type of storage pool you must create first. For example, if you want a RAID 5 volume, you must create a RAID 5 storage pool first. Once this RAID 5 storage pool is created, the available space on that storage pool can be used to create the RAID 5 volume. Ensure that you have a sufficient number of disk drives available to create your volume. The number of disk drives you need varies, according to volume type. (Your operating system sees each volume you create as a single logical drive, no matter how many physical drives it comprises.) 4-4
