s When Hibernation is turned on and the computer reaches a critical low-battery condition, the system saves data to a Hibernation file on the hard drive, then shuts down. The factory-default setting for Hibernation is On. s When Hibernation is turned off and the computer reaches a critical low-battery condition, the system initiates Suspend instead of Hibernation. The system remains briefly in Suspend until the battery is almost totally discharged. The computer then shuts down and unsaved work is lost. Turning off Hibernation is not recommended. Setting Hibernation Timeouts-When Hibernation is turned on, you can select options from the Timeout scroll box drop-down list to customize Hibernation timeouts two ways. s Select a timeout in hours to specify the amount of time the computer remains in Suspend before initiating Hibernation. s Select Standby if you want the computer to enter Suspend when the system would otherwise initiate Hibernation. The timeout in hours and Standby options are in addition to the default Low Battery setting. For example, even if you select a specific Hibernation timeout in hours, the system will still initiate Hibernation in a critical low-battery condition unless you have turned Hibernation off. Specifying the Location for the Hibernation File-The system reserves space on the hard drive equal to the amount of system memory. When Hibernation is initiated, all data in memory is saved to a Hibernation file, which is placed in the space reserved for it on the hard drive. The Drive For Hibernation File scroll box contains optional locations for the Hibernation file and displays the amount of space available at each location. The space currently required for the Hibernation file is displayed beneath the scroll box. If the hard drive on your computer is partitioned, the drive options listed in the Drive For Hibernation File scroll box are for partitions on the hard drive that is in the hard drive bay. For more information about hard drive partitioning, refer to "Using a Partitioned Hard Drive" in Chapter 6.
