Controlling Battery Discharge This section tells how to maximize battery operating time. For information on running the system at other battery power levels or while the computer is connected to an external power source, refer to Chapter 4, "Managing Power." Battery pack operating time is affected by how you s Configure the system s Use the computer s Store a battery pack Configuring the System To set up the system for extended battery operating time: s Select the High battery conservation level. (Refer to "Customizing Power Settings" in Chapter 4.) s Select a low screen brightness. (Refer to the table in "Using Hotkeys" in Chapter 3.) s Select a short screen save timeout. (Refer to "Customizing Power Settings" in Chapter 4.) s Enable the system to turn off PC Card modems when they are not in use. (Refer to "Customizing Power Settings" in Chapter 4.) s Disconnect external equipment that does not use an external power source when you are not using it. Using the Computer To extend battery operating time while using the computer: s Allow a battery pack to fully charge before removing external power from the computer. s Initiate Hibernation or Suspend if you will not be using the computer for several hours. s Exit modem programs when you are not using them. s Remove PC Cards that you are not using.
