Installing TeemTalk On UNIX Based Products 2. The installation must be conducted under the window system which TeemTalk is to be run in. Several environment variables and file search paths are used and these are only set when the window system is running. The installation also uses several X Window utilities which will only work when the X Window system is running. There are several stages to the installation: Copying The Executable The TeemTalk executable is copied from the temporary directory to a well known bin directory. The directory is one of the following: Motif based systems: /usr/bin/X11 OpenWindows based servers: $OPENWINHOME/bin/X11 Compiling The Fonts All fonts files supplied with TeemTalk are in an architecture independent format called BDF (Bit Distribution Format) and need converting from this independent format to a compiled format suitable for the workstation on which TeemTalk is to be run. The font conversion utility generally takes the hardware byte ordering, bit ordering and padding into account when performing the conversion/compilation. Motif Systems For X servers prior to X11 R5 the conversion utility is called bdftosnf and on X11 R5 servers the utility is called bdftopcf. Both take the .bdf font file and produce an architecture dependent version of .snf or .pcf respectively. If the installation script finds the bdftopcf it assumes that the font files should be in pcf format, otherwise it does the conversion for snf. Various parameters are supported by the conversion utilities in order to specify the bit/byte ordering etc. Generally the workstation vendor has ensured that the default parameters for the workstation have been built in so that it is unnecessary to explicitly supply them. The installation script assumes that this is the case. OpenWindows On OpenWindows servers the installation script uses the Sun convertfont utility to perform the conversion to the native Sun .fb format. 2-10
