SECTION 13 - MESSAGES, ABBREVIATIONS, & NAV TERMS 13.3 Navigation Terms The following navigation terms are used on the GNC 420 and in this Pilot's Guide. Refer to Figures 13-1 and 13-2 for graphic representation of navigation terms. NORTH WPT 2 DTK DIS PROFILE VERTICAL NAVIGATION BRG TRK XTK GS AIRPLANE WPT 1 Figure 13-1 Illustrated NAV Terms CURRENT ALTITUDE AND POSITION TIME AND DISTANCE TO PROFILE VERTICAL SPEED REQUIRED DISTANCE TO TARGET TARGET ALTITUDE AND POSITION AIRPORT Figure 13-2 Illustrated Vertical NAV Terms Term ALT (altitude) BRG (bearing) CAS (calibrated airspeed) CTS (course to steer) Description Height above mean sea level (MSL). The compass direction from the present position to a destination waypoint. Indicated airspeed corrected for instrument errors. The recommended direction to steer in order to reduce course error or stay on course. Provides the most efficient heading to get back to the desired course and proceed along the flight plan. CUM (cumulative) The total of all legs in a flight plan (cumulative distance). DIS (distance) DOP (dilution of precision) DTK (desired track) The "great circle" distance from the present position to a destination waypoint. A measure of satellite geometry quality on a scale of one to ten (lowest numbers are best, highest numbers are worst).
