Horizontal Positioning The display indicates the left margin and all other horizontal distances in terms of columns. On paper, however, the width of these columns depends on the selected pitch. This word processor supports three character widths: Name Pica Elite Micron Character Spacing 10 characters per inch (cpi) 12 cpi 15 cpi Screen Width vs. Paper Width The distance between the left and right margins must be smaller than the paper width. Suppose your paper is 8.5 inches wide and you are using Pica pitch (10 cpi). You can fit a maximum of 85 characters per line. The distance between margins should therefore be smaller than 85 columns on the screen (check the COL indicator on the status line). The following table indicates the maximum distance between margins for letter-size paper: Width Letter Size 8.5 inch Maximum Characters Between Margins 10 (Pica) 12 (Elite) 15 (Micron) 85 102 127 Changing the Pitch CODE 1 PITCH The pitch is automatically set to 10 when the power is turned on. Pressing CODE + PITCH will cycle the PITCH indicator through the following values: PITCH: 10 12 15 10 When the pitch is changed, a format symbol t appears in the dead column of the first line of that paragraph. The text is automatically reformatted down from the format symbol. 55
