Optical and Tape Drives In the upper 5.25-inch drive bay, you can install only an optical drive. In the lower 5.25-inch drive bay, you can install either an optical or a tape backup unit. Removing an Optical or Tape Drive CAUTION: Only trained service technicians are authorized to remove the system cover and access any of the components inside the system. Before performing any procedure, see your Product Information Guide for complete information about safety precautions, working inside the computer and protecting against electrostatic discharge. 1 Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical outlet. 2 Open the system. See "Opening the System" on page 41. 3 Remove the front drive bezel. See "Removing the Front Drive Bezel" on page 42. 4 Disconnect the power and data cables from the back of the drive. See Figure 3-7. 5 Slide the lever on the sliding plate in the direction of the arrow to release the shoulder screw. 6 Slide the drive out to remove it from the drive bay. Optical and Tape Drives
In the upper 5.25-inch drive bay, you can install only an optical drive. In the lower 5.25-inch drive bay,
you can install either an optical or a tape backup unit.
Removing an Optical or Tape Drive
CAUTION:
Only trained service technicians are authorized to remove the system cover and access any of the
components inside the system. Before performing any procedure, see your

complete information about safety precautions, working inside the computer and protecting against electrostatic
discharge.

Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical outlet.

Open the system. See "Opening the System" on page 41.

Remove the front drive bezel. See "Removing the Front Drive Bezel" on page 42.

Disconnect the power and data cables from the back of the drive. See Figure 3-7.

Slide the lever on the sliding plate in the direction of the arrow to release the shoulder screw.

Slide the drive out to remove it from the drive bay.
