2 Installing and Maintaining the ISR 9024 Interconnect The hardware maintenance operations described in this chapter require appropriate training and knowledge of safety procedures. The safety procedures for Cluster Platform are described in the HP Cluster Platform Site Preparation Guide. The following interconnect maintenance topics are described: • Overview of the ISR 9024 (Section 2.1). • Unpacking the ISR 9024 (Section 2.2). • Mounting the ISR 9024 in the rack (Section 2.3). • Installing the ISR 9024 power supply unit (Section 2.4). • Operating the ISR 9024 interconnect ( Section 2.5). This is an older model which is still supported. For information on the ISR 9024 S/D RoHS compliant model refer to Chapter 3 (page 39). 2.1 Overview of the ISR 9024 Interconnect The InfiniBand interconnect, ISR 9024 is a scaleable high-bandwidth interconnect employing the embedded InfiniScale III switch chip. An embedded InfiniBand subnet manager and the management software enable you to collect performance statistics and environmental monitoring data. The subnet manager software automatically discovers the fabric topology and configures the hosts and switches. Internally managed ISR 9024 units are equipped with a management card that you access through either an Ethernet port (out-of-band management) or to a serial port (console CLI management). Externally managed ISR 9024 units support in-band management over the InfiniBand fabric and also provide an I²C port for channel management purposes. An industry-standard management information base (MIB) is provided, enabling you to administer the interconnect by using SNMP or InfiniBand in-band management. You configure and manage the fabric by using either the integrated graphical user interface (GUI), or the command line interface (CLI). You use a console, remote telnet, or HTTP (Java client) connection to access the interconnect's management interfaces. The management interfaces enable you to monitor, upgrade, and troubleshoot the interconnect and its network (fabric). Technical specifications for the ISR 9024 are provided in Appendix A. The ISR 9024 is a 24-port 4x or 12x (10 Gb/s) modular InfiniBand interconnect that is capable of switching all ports simultaneously at full wire speed. The interconnect contains a single 24 InfiniBand 4X port switch chip. This switch chip incorporates an internal crossbar switch capable of supporting cut-through switching to minimize latency. This 24-port chassis functions as a standalone unit in small clusters of up to 24 servers, or as a building block for larger clusters. Larger clusters are constructed from multiple ISR 9024 interconnects functioning as the cluster building blocks. In larger configurations, only a single internally-managed ISR 9024 is required to run the management software, while the other interconnects are externally managed. (Using two internally managed devices ensures that the fabric management has high availability). The ISR 9024 chassis is a 1U-high 19-inch wide rack mounted ANSI and ETSI-compliant chassis that contains the following modules: • The base board, which hosts the InfiniScale III switch chip and provides the following: - 24 4x 10 Gb/s port switch. - 12 4x physical connection to base board ports. - Switch to PCI bridge. - Base board to management card interface. 2.1 Overview of the ISR 9024 Interconnect 29
