10 Working with clusters Within a management group, you create subgroups of storage systems called clusters. A cluster is a grouping of storage systems from which you create volumes. Volumes seamlessly span the storage systems in the cluster. Think of a cluster as a pool of storage. You add storage to the pool by adding storage systems. You then carve volumes and snapshots out of the pool. Before creating a cluster, make sure you are familiar with the iSCSI information in Chapter 19 on page 299. Clusters and storage system capacity Typically you create clusters with storage systems of the same capacity. While clusters can contain storage systems with different capacities, all storage systems in a cluster operate at a capacity equal to that of the smallest-capacity storage system. This capacity impact is particularly important to consider when you plan to add additional storage systems to an existing cluster. Prerequisites Before you create a cluster, you must have created a management group. Creating additional clusters When you create a management group, you create the first cluster in that management group. Use the following steps to create additional clusters in existing management groups. Prerequisites • An existing management group • At least one storage system in the management group that is not already in a cluster. Number of storage systems in clusters For information about the recommended maximum number of storage systems that can be added safely to a cluster, see "Configuration Summary overview" on page 151 or Chapter 8 on page 145. To create additional clusters 1. Log in to the management group for which you want to create a cluster. 2. Right-click the storage system, and select Add to Existing or New Cluster. 3.
