Planning volume types • Primary volumes are volumes used for data storage. • Remote volumes are used as targets for Remote Copy for business continuance, backup and recovery, and data mining/migration configurations. See the Remote Copy User Manual for detailed information about remote volumes. • A SmartClone volume is a type of volume that is created from an existing volume or snapshot. SmartClone volumes are described in Chapter 14 on page 233. Guide for volumes When creating a volume, you define the following characteristics. A volume name is from 1 to 127 characters and is case sensitive. The volume name cannot be changed. You can enable and customize a default naming convention for volumes. See "Setting naming conventions" on page 30 for more information. [Optional] A description of the volume. The logical block storage size of the volume. Hosts and file systems operate as if storage space equal to the volume size is available in the cluster. This volume size may exceed the true allocated disk space on the cluster for data storage, which facilitates adding more storage systems to the cluster later for seamless storage growth. However, if the volume size does exceed true allocated disk space, the ability to make snapshots may be impacted. See Chapter 13 on page 213. Remote volumes contain no data, since they serve as pointers to tell the system where to make a copy of a primary snapshot. Therefore, remote volumes do not have a size. Servers Both Advanced Tab [Optional] Servers are set up in the management group to connect application hosts to volumes. Select the server that you want to have access to the volume you are creating. Cluster Both If the management group contains more than one cluster, you must specify the cluster on which the volume resides. 206 Using volumes
