5. The pair of DIMMs added to a bank (see "DIMM banks", Figure 57 on page 106) must be of the same size and clock speed. 6. If the server has two SMP Expansion Modules installed, you can only hot-add memory to the top SMP Expansion Module. 7. You can enable the hot-add and hot-replace memory features or you can enable the fastpath memory feature, but you cannot enable both at the same time. The fastpath memory feature increases memory performance. Enabling the memory hot-add feature: Before you can hot-add DIMMs, the memory hot-add feature must be enabled, and memory mirroring must be disabled. Notes: 1. For a multi-node system, you must complete the following instructions for the primary system when it is not in a merged state. Hot-add and memory mirroring should both be disabled on any additional systems within the multi-node partition. 2. When hot-adding to a multi-node setup, do not open more than one DIMM access door at a time. Complete the hot-add operation in one system prior to starting any hot-add operations for any other system in the multi-node partition. 3. Ensure that you hot-add DIMMs in pairs of two; that the new DIMMs are the same size and clock speed; and that the port to which you intend to add them is empty. Attention: If two SMP Expansion Modules are installed in a server, you cannot hot-replace or hot-add the DIMMs in the lower SMP Expansion Module because accessing the lower SMP Expansion Module requires removing the upper SMP Expansion Module, a procedure that requires turning off the server. See "Removing and replacing DIMMs" on page 108 for information on how to remove and replace DIMMs while the server is turned off. Complete the following steps to ensure that these features are correctly configured: 1. Start the Configuration/Setup Utility. 2. Select Advanced Setup from the menu. 3. Select Memory Settings. 4. In the next window select Memory Mirroring Settings. 5. Ensure that Memory Mirroring is set to Disabled. 6. Press Esc. 7. Ensure that Memory Hot Add is set to Enabled. Note: A minimum of 4 GB of memory must be installed in the server in order for hot-add memory to be available; otherwise, the option will not appear in the Configuration/Setup Utility program. 8. Save and exit the Configuration/Setup Utility. Hot-adding DIMMs: Complete the following steps to hot-add DIMMs to the server's SMP Expansion Module: 1. Review the information in "Installation guidelines" on page 79, "Handling static-sensitive devices" on page 80, and "Safety information" on page 257. 2. Pull out on the quick release latches on each side of the server; then, pull the server out of its rack enclosure until it stops. 3. Open the top cover. Chapter 4. Installing options 113

5.
The
pair
of
DIMMs
added
to
a
bank
(see
“DIMM
banks”,
Figure
57
on
page
106)
must
be
of
the
same
size
and
clock
speed.
6.
If
the
server
has
two
SMP
Expansion
Modules
installed,
you
can
only
hot-add
memory
to
the
top
SMP
Expansion
Module.
7.
You
can
enable
the
hot-add
and
hot-replace
memory
features
or
you
can
enable
the
fastpath
memory
feature,
but
you
cannot
enable
both
at
the
same
time.
The
fastpath
memory
feature
increases
memory
performance.
Enabling
the
memory
hot-add
feature:
Before
you
can
hot-add
DIMMs,
the
memory
hot-add
feature
must
be
enabled,
and
memory
mirroring
must
be
disabled.
Notes:
1.
For
a
multi-node
system,
you
must
complete
the
following
instructions
for
the
primary
system
when
it
is
not
in
a
merged
state.
Hot-add
and
memory
mirroring
should
both
be
disabled
on
any
additional
systems
within
the
multi-node
partition.
2.
When
hot-adding
to
a
multi-node
setup,
do
not
open
more
than
one
DIMM
access
door
at
a
time.
Complete
the
hot-add
operation
in
one
system
prior
to
starting
any
hot-add
operations
for
any
other
system
in
the
multi-node
partition.
3.
Ensure
that
you
hot-add
DIMMs
in
pairs
of
two;
that
the
new
DIMMs
are
the
same
size
and
clock
speed;
and
that
the
port
to
which
you
intend
to
add
them
is
empty.
Attention:
If
two
SMP
Expansion
Modules
are
installed
in
a
server,
you
cannot
hot-replace
or
hot-add
the
DIMMs
in
the
lower
SMP
Expansion
Module
because
accessing
the
lower
SMP
Expansion
Module
requires
removing
the
upper
SMP
Expansion
Module,
a
procedure
that
requires
turning
off
the
server.
See
“Removing
and
replacing
DIMMs”
on
page
108
for
information
on
how
to
remove
and
replace
DIMMs
while
the
server
is
turned
off.
Complete
the
following
steps
to
ensure
that
these
features
are
correctly
configured:
1.
Start
the
Configuration/Setup
Utility.
2.
Select
Advanced
Setup
from
the
menu.
3.
Select
Memory
Settings
.
4.
In
the
next
window
select
Memory
Mirroring
Settings
.
5.
Ensure
that
Memory
Mirroring
is
set
to
Disabled
.
6.
Press
Esc
.
7.
Ensure
that
Memory
Hot
Add
is
set
to
Enabled
.
Note:
A
minimum
of
4
GB
of
memory
must
be
installed
in
the
server
in
order
for
hot-add
memory
to
be
available;
otherwise,
the
option
will
not
appear
in
the
Configuration/Setup
Utility
program.
8.
Save
and
exit
the
Configuration/Setup
Utility.
Hot-adding
DIMMs:
Complete
the
following
steps
to
hot-add
DIMMs
to
the
server’s
SMP
Expansion
Module:
1.
Review
the
information
in
“Installation
guidelines”
on
page
79,
“Handling
static-sensitive
devices”
on
page
80,
and
“Safety
information”
on
page
257.
2.
Pull
out
on
the
quick
release
latches
on
each
side
of
the
server;
then,
pull
the
server
out
of
its
rack
enclosure
until
it
stops.
3.
Open
the
top
cover.
