Level 2 light path The level 2 light path consists of the light path diagnostics panel (see Figure 27 on page 66). Note: See Chapter 8, "Parts listing, Type 8870," on page 249 to determine which components are replaceable by the customer, and which components should be replaced by an IBM field service technician. Level 2 light path LED FRU/action All LEDs off (error log full) Note: "Event Log" LED may be lit. 1. System-Error log is 75% full; analyze the log entries to determine the nature of the error messages. 2. Save and/or clear the log. 3. For a PFA alert, check error log for failures. 4. To clear a PFA alert; remove ac power for at least 20 seconds; then, reconnect and power up system. CPU (failed microprocessor) Note: Verify correct installation sequence; see "Installing and replacing a microprocessor" on page 116. Check event log or follow level 3 light path chart (see "Level 3 light path" on page 193) to determine location of failing level 4 light path LED (CPU). MEMORY (memory error) Check event log or follow level 3 light path chart (see "Level 3 light path" on page 193) to determine location of failing level 4 light path LED (DIMM). DASD (hot-swap hard drive failure) 1. Failing drive (reseat/replace). Note: If RAID system, refer to Hardware Maintenance Manual for 2. Be sure the fans are operating correctly and the air flow is good. the specific RAID adapter. 3. SCSI backplane. PCI -X BUS (adapter failure) 1. Check System Error log. 2. Failing adapter. 3. PCI-X board. FAN (fan failure) Note: A failing fan can also cause the TEMP and DASD LEDs to be on. 1. Check individual fan LEDs. 2. Replace respective fan. 3. SMP board. TEMP (temperature too high) 1. If a fan LED is on, replace the fan. 2. Ambient temperature must be within normal operating specifications. See "Features and specifications" on page 3 3. Examine System Error log. a. System over recommended temperature b. DASD over recommended temperature 1) Overheating hard disk drive 2) DASD backplane c. Microprocessor x over recommended temperature (where x is microprocessor number) 1) Reseat microprocessor x and heat sink. 2) Microprocessor x. d. Power supply fault / over temp v Failing power supply e. Operator information panel Chapter 7. Symptom-to-FRU index 191
