The Desktop Environment programmers Configuration Files The system.mwmrc file containing configuration information for the workspace menu and key and button bindings Motif provides the window manager for the end user, the widget toolkit for application developers, and the style guide to help developers design and build proper Motif-compliant applications. Similarly with X, system administrators can focus on developing the appropriate CDE configuration files and view Motif as mostly "programmers' stuff." CDE CDE consists of the following: Workspace Manager Executable program that provides Motif-based window frames, window management, a workspace menu, and the front panel File Manager Program that iconically manages files and directories through direct manipulation Style Manager Container of dialog boxes that control elements of the CDE environment, like workspace color and fonts Help Manager Based on the HP Help System, this program provides context-sensitive help text on CDE components Login Manager Daemon-like application that handles login and password verification Session Manager Manager that handles saving and restoring user sessions Application Manager Manager that registers and keeps track of applications in the CDE environment Configuration Files A large set of files that, for the most part, you can avoid; more details on HPUX later CDE provides a number of basic, end-user productivity enhancing applications, including a clock, a calender, a datebook, and a MIME-compliant mailer for sending multimedia electronic mail messages. The IRIX Desktop Environment The IRIX desktop environment is not based upon CDE. A version of CDE is available for IRIX, but it is not supplied as part of the core OS. The desktop environment on IRIX is a Motif-based environment that is unique to IRIX. The environment has a very MS Windows-like look and feel. The SGI manual Desktop User's Guide, gives a very thorough introduction to the functionality of the IRIX desktop; we will not attempt to provide an overview here since the manual is available freely online at the SGI website, http://www.sgi.com. X Windows on IRIX The IRIX X windows implementation is based upon the X Consortium's X11 Revision 6, with additional SGI-specific changes. For additional information regarding X windows on IRIX, we suggest that you refer to the IRIX documentation regarding X11. 112
