The Desktop Environment system.hpwmrc contained the configuration of the workspace menu and button and key bindings. system.hpwmrc has been replaced with the Motif version system.mwmrc. system.hpwmrc, system.hpwmrc, and system.hpwmrc could be copied to a user's home directory and modified to suit the user's personal taste. The personalized versions, .x11start, .Xdefaults, and .hpwmrc overrode the systemwide versions, sys.x11start, sys.Xdefaults, and system.hpwmrc. Motif Configuration Files Motif added only one new configuration file to the X list: system.mwmrc. By convention, this file is kept with the X configuration files in /usr/lib/X11. Technically, this file is not new at all, but is simply the Motif replacement for system.hpwmrc. From an end-user's or system administrator's perspective, the Motif widget toolkit represents very little change in the user environment. But, from the point of view of the programmer, the Motif widget toolkit is a very great advance over programming in "raw" X. CDE Configuration Files By convention, the configuration files for CDE live in the directory /usr/dt; in principle, there could be as many as 80 files that could be edited to configure some aspect of the CDE environment. But, if you remove from that list files that (1) configure CDE applications as opposed to the environment itself; (2) establish default actions and datatype definitions that, although you will create your own definitions in separate files, you will never modify; (3) are CDE working files and should not be modified; and (4) more appropriately are associated with configuring the underlying UNIX, X and Motif environments underlying CDE, including various shell environments, then CDE has only about 19 configuration files: .Xauthority .Xdefaults .dtprofile dtwm.fp dtwmrc sys.dtprofile sys.dtwmrc sys.font sys.resources sys.sessions Xaccess Xconfig Xfailsafe Xreset Xresources Xservers Xsession Xsetup Xstartup Now, while 19 configuration files is still a large number, you should not be alarmed; many of them never need to be edited and several can be ignored. As a consequence only several really need to be understood in any detail. A detailed discussion of each of the configuration files is outside of our present scope, but an excellent account of them can be found in HP-UX 11.0 System Administration: Handbook and Toolkit (see http://www.phptr.com/ptrbooks/ptr_0130125148.html).
