ADDING TONER When the drum/toner cartridge becomes empty of toner, a message indicating the need to replace the drum/toner cartridge will appear on the display. Replace the drum/toner cartridge following the procedure below. The machine as shipped does not have a cartridge installed. Follow steps 5 and 6 below for installing the first cartridge. NOTE q The drum/toner cartridge contains toner and a photoconductive drum. The photoconductor on the drum can deteriorate by exposure to light for an extended period of time. q Do not remove the cartridge from its protective package until it is to be installed into the machine. 1 Open the front cover. 4 While depressing the lock release button, pull out the drum/toner cartridge and remove it. 2 Lower the cartridge lock lever. 5 Remove a new drum/toner cartridge from its bag and remove the protective material A. A 3 Pull out the duplex module. Unlatch the unit and gently move a module away from the machine. If the machine is not equipped with a duplex module, open the side cover similarly. 6 Shake the new cartridge horizontally five or six times. 4
