CHAPTER 1 Introducing the EMS This chapter introduces the UNIX version of the EMS. 1.1 Element Management System (EMS) Overview An Element Management System (EMS) is part of a Network Management System (NMS). A Network Management System (NMS) is used to manage a network and the communication between network elements. A network element can be a physical piece of equipment on the network, the components of a device on the network, or parts of the network itself. An EMS is used to manage one or more network elements of a specific type. This is illustrated in the following example. Figure 1 Relationship Between NMS, EMS, and Network Elements AB C Internet In this example, network administrators use the NMS (A) to monitor and manage the whole network. They use the EMS (B) to manage and monitor the EPON devices (C) in the network. The NetAtlas EPON Manager Element Management System ("EMS") retrieves management information from devices using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP, RFC 1901). The EMS integrates with HP OpenView Network Node NetAtlas EPON Manager User's Guide 19
