General problems v Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problem is solved. v See Chapter 4, "Parts listing, System x3655, Type 7985," on page 97 to determine which components are customer replaceable units (CRU) and which components are field replaceable units (FRU). v If an action step is preceded by "(Trained service technician only)," that step must be performed only by a trained service technician. Symptom Action A cover lock is broken, an LED If the part is a CRU, replace it. If the part is a FRU, the part must be replaced by a is not working, or a similar trained service technician. problem has occurred. Hard disk drive problems v Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problem is solved. v See Chapter 4, "Parts listing, System x3655, Type 7985," on page 97 to determine which components are customer replaceable units (CRU) and which components are field replaceable units (FRU). v If an action step is preceded by "(Trained service technician only)," that step must be performed only by a trained service technician. Symptom Action Not all drives are recognized by the hard disk drive diagnostic test (the Fixed Disk test). Remove the drive that is indicated by the diagnostic tests; then, run the hard disk drive diagnostic test again. If the remaining drives are recognized, replace the drive that you removed with a new one. Verify that the hard disk drives have the minimum firmware levels. The server stops responding during the hard disk drive diagnostic test. Remove the hard disk drive that was being tested when the server stopped responding, and run the diagnostic test again. If the hard disk drive diagnostic test runs successfully, replace the drive that you removed with a new one. A hard disk drive was not detected while the operating system was being started. Reseat all hard disk drives and cables; then, run the hard disk drive diagnostic tests again. A hard disk drive passes the diagnostic Fixed Disk Test but the problem remains. Run the diagnostic SCSI Fixed Disk Test (see "Running the diagnostic programs" on page 144). Note: This test is not available on servers that have RAID arrays or servers that have IDE or SATA hard disk drives. Chapter 5. Diagnostics 127

to
determine
which

(FRU).
v
If
an
action
step
is
preceded
by
“(Trained

only),”
that
step
must
be
performed
only
by
a
trained
service
technician.
Symptom
Action
A
cover

is
broken,
an
LED
is
not
working,
or
a
similar
problem
has
occurred.
If
the
part

Remove
the

drive
diagnostic
test
again.
If
the

Remove
the

again.
If
the

runs
successfully,
replace
the

Run
the
diagnostic
SCSI

Note:
This
test
is
not
