Figure 4-14 Printing with the Infrared Serial Port An optional HP infrared (IR) adapter is available for the HP LaserJet 5/5M printer. This adapter is compliant with the specifications determined by the Infrared Data Association (IrDA). The HP IR adapter works by transmitting data similarly to a serial interface but without the cable. Data transmission occurs at speeds up to 115 k bits per second. The HP infrared adapter attaches to the IR port on the back of the printer, located between the parallel port and serial port (see Figure 4-14). Note The HP IR adapter is compatible with a wide variety of IrDA-compliant portable devices (such as a laptop computer); however, the method for printing will vary depending on the type of device and the operating system in use. Refer to the instruction manual for your portable equipment for specific instructions on printing from that device. The IrDA standard for infrared communications represents an emerging technology. Older non-IrDA-compliant portable devices may not be compatible with the HP LaserJet 5/5M printer. If you experience problems when printing with the IR adapter, contact the manufacturer or dealer of your portable device to verify compatibility with the IrDA standard. See "Accessories and Options" in Chapter 1 for ordering information. 4-30 Printing EN

Printing with the Infrared Serial Port
An optional HP infrared (IR) adapter is available for the HP LaserJet
5/5M printer.
This adapter is compliant with the specifications
determined by the Infrared Data Association (IrDA).
The HP IR adapter works by transmitting data similarly to a serial
interface but without the cable.
Data transmission occurs at speeds up to
115 k bits per second.
The HP infrared adapter attaches to the IR port on the back of the
printer, located between the parallel port and serial port (see Figure
4-14).
The HP IR adapter is compatible with a wide variety of IrDA-compliant
portable devices (such as a laptop computer); however, the method for
printing will vary depending on the type of device and the operating
system in use.
Refer to the instruction manual for your portable
equipment for specific instructions on printing from that device.
Note
The IrDA standard for infrared communications represents an emerging
technology.
Older non-IrDA-compliant portable devices may not be
compatible with the HP LaserJet 5/5M printer.
If you experience
problems when printing with the IR adapter, contact the manufacturer or
dealer of your portable device to verify compatibility with the IrDA
standard.
See “Accessories and Options” in Chapter 1 for ordering information.
