The DHCP relay agent can be used to forward DHCP packets sent from a client to a server on a different network segment. After the DHCP packet has been received by the DHCP server, the DHCP relay agent offers the reply packet sent by the server back to the client. In order to provide the information needed by the DHCP server to assign an address or other parameters to the user, the relay agent can be configured to do the following: • Insert the relay agent information, such as the option 82 information, into the client packet while the packet is being relayed to the server. • Remove the relay agent information from the reply packet as the packet is sent to the client.
