System Management ping The ping user EXEC command sends ICMP echo request packets to another node on the network. Syntax ping host [size packet_size] [count packet_count] [timeout time_out] st • host-IP address being contacted. • packet_size-Number of bytes in a packet, from 56 to 1,472 bytes. The actual packet size is eight bytes larger than the size specified because the switch adds header information. • packet_count-Number of packets to send, from 1 to 65,535 packets. If 0 is entered it pings until stopped. • time_out-Timeout in milliseconds to wait for each reply, from 1 to 65,535 milliseconds. Default Configuration The default packet size is 56 bytes. The default packet count is 4 packets. The default time-out is 1,000 milliseconds. Command Mode User EXEC mode User Guidelines Press Ctrl-C to stop pinging. Following are sample results of the ping command: • Destination does not respond-If the host does not respond, a "no answer from host" message appears in 10 seconds. • Destination unreachable-The gateway for this destination indicates that the destination is unreachable. • Network or host unreachable-The switch found no corresponding entry in the route table. To ping an out-of-band IP address, use the out-of-band IP address format - oob/ip-address. System Management 423
