22 Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Syslog This chapter contains commands to configure and monitor the simple network management protocol (SNMP) v1/v2 and Syslog. The chapter contains the following sections: • SNMP Commands • Syslog Commands SNMP Commands The simple network management protocol (SNMP) is used to communicate management information between the network management stations and the agents in the network elements. Dell Networking OS supports SNMP versions 1, and 2c supporting only read-only mode. Important Points to Remember • Typically, 5-second timeout and 3-second retry values on an SNMP server are sufficient for both local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) applications. If you experience a timeout with these values, the recommended best practice on Dell Networking switches (to accommodate their high port density) is to increase the timeout and retry values on your SNMP server to the following: - SNMP Timeout - greater than 3 seconds. - SNMP Retry count - greater than 2 seconds. • SNMP operations are not supported on a virtual local area network (VLAN). Syslog Commands The following commands allow you to configure logging functions on all Dell Networking switches. • clear logging • logging buffered • logging console • logging hostname • logging monitor • logging source-interface 237
