Chapter 10 Applications Use a Hardware-based Firewall Place a hardware-based firewall between your network and the Internet (a software-based firewall on your computer would just protect the computer itself, not the NAS since your computer is not between your NAS and the Internet). Figure 112 Firewall Ideally your firewall should have the following: • Stateful packet inspection to control access between the Internet and your network and protect your NAS (and computers) from hacking attacks. • IDP (Intrusion Detection and Prevention) to detect malicious packets within normal network traffic and take immediate action against them. • Anti-virus to check files you download for computer viruses. P2P Download and Your Firewall The anti-virus feature on a firewall probably cannot check P2P downloads for viruses, so use antivirus software on your computer to scan the NAS for viruses. When you download using P2P download, many other P2P download users are also trying to download the file from you.
