3 128-Port Interconnect Modules The 128-port QS64A chassis in an HP Cluster Platform is modular, enabling the installation of different combinations of midplanes and cards to support varying cluster configurations. Configurations are determined by the number of nodes in the cluster, the density of the nodes, and other options such as connecting the cluster control node to the interconnect. Clusters are preconfigured before delivery. Interconnect configurations are assembled from the following component modules: • QM500 - The QM500 is PCI X based, high performance, 64 bit, 133MHz network adapter card, containing the Elan communications device. (See Section 3.1). • The interconnect enclosure, containing the midplane. In a federated network, the interconnect is either a node-level (NLI) or a top-level (TLI) configuration as follows: - An NLI contains up to 4 QM501 16-port switch cards, 4 QM502 switch cards and one or two QM503 controller cards. Each NLI implements the first three stages of the interconnect network (connected in a fat tree topology) and provides ports for up to 64 nodes, each fitted with a QM500 network adapter. - A TLI contains up to 8 QM501 cards which provide the fourth and fifth stages of the network. (See Section 3.2).. • Switch Cards: - QM501 - The QM501 is a 16-port switch card built from eight Elite switch components connected in a two stage, fat tree topology - QM502 - The QM502 is a 16-port switch card containing four Elite switch components. It provides the third stage in the fat tree topology. - QM511C - The QM511C is a 16-port switch card containing seven Elite switch components. It provides all 3 stages in the fat tree topology, 4 Elites providing the first stage, 2 Elites for the second and a single Elite for the third. - QM511L - The QM511L has no external ports and 1 Elite switch components. It provides the 3rd stage in the fat tree topology when QM511C modules are absent. (See Section 3.3).. • QM503 - The QM503 is an interconnect controller and clock distribution card that provides access to interconnect control functions over Ethernet and distributes clock signals and JTAG information to the switch cards, (see Section 3.4). • QM580 - The QM580 is a clock distribution box that provides an external clock synchronization source for a federated network, (See Section 3.5). • Interconnect Cables - Three types of cable are used to construct an interconnect network, depending on the size of the cluster (See Section 1.3.1). 128-Port Interconnect Modules 3-1

128-Port Interconnect Modules
The 128–port QS64A chassis in an HP Cluster Platform is modular, enabling the
installation of different combinations of midplanes and cards to support varying
cluster configurations. Configurations are determined by the number of nodes in
the cluster, the density of the nodes, and other options such as connecting the
cluster control node to the interconnect. Clusters are preconfigured before delivery.
Interconnect configurations are assembled from the following component modules:
QM500 – The QM500 is PCI X based, high performance, 64 bit, 133MHz
network adapter card, containing the Elan communications device. (See
Section 3.1).
The interconnect enclosure, containing the midplane. In a federated network,
the interconnect is either a node-level (NLI) or a top-level (TLI) configuration
as follows:
-
An NLI contains up to 4 QM501 16-port switch cards, 4 QM502 switch
cards and one or two QM503 controller cards. Each NLI implements the
first three stages of the interconnect network (connected in a fat tree
topology) and provides ports for up to 64 nodes, each fitted with a QM500
network adapter.
-
A TLI contains up to 8 QM501 cards which provide the fourth and fifth
stages of the network.
(See Section 3.2)..
Switch Cards:
-
QM501 – The QM501 is a 16-port switch card built from eight Elite switch
components connected in a two stage, fat tree topology
-
QM502 – The QM502 is a 16-port switch card containing four Elite switch
components. It provides the third stage in the fat tree topology.
-
QM511C – The QM511C is a 16-port switch card containing seven Elite
switch components. It provides all 3 stages in the fat tree topology, 4
Elites providing the first stage, 2 Elites for the second and a single Elite
for the third.
-
QM511L – The QM511L has no external ports and 1 Elite switch
components. It provides the 3rd stage in the fat tree topology when
QM511C modules are absent.
(See Section 3.3)..
QM503 – The QM503 is an interconnect controller and clock distribution
card that provides access to interconnect control functions over Ethernet and
distributes clock signals and JTAG information to the switch cards, (see
Section 3.4).
QM580 – The QM580 is a clock distribution box that provides an external clock
synchronization source for a federated network, (See Section 3.5).
Interconnect Cables – Three types of cable are used to construct an interconnect
network, depending on the size of the cluster (See Section 1.3.1).
