Religious, Professional
and Non-profit Organizations
Religious, Professional and Non-profit Organizations are somewhat similar
at a basic business level. They are all tightly budgeted, they all know the value
of professionally prepared communications materials and fundraising is a critical
part of activities. Color is becoming more important in these sectors to be able
to effectively communicate with members and the general public.
Churches depend on their parishioners for donations, professional organizations
depend upon dues paid from their members and nonprofits depend largely
on fundraising activities for income. All sectors need to actively solicit funds
to operate. Printed materials are part of a larger communication plan that helps
foster social capital.
These organizations face many challenges. There is certainly a fiscal squeeze
on this segment. Government support to the non-profit sector is limited and
private philanthropy has not kept pace with the growth of the overall economy or
of the non-profit sector. Competition for dollars between other nonprofits is also a
growing problem. There are also mounting pressures to demonstrate effectiveness
and accountability within these organizations. Technology can also be a challenge
within smaller organizations. For instance, many churches are not networked.
They may have 1 computer and 1 serial printer and many use digital and analog
duplicators instead of printers or copiers. Some smaller nonprofits find technology
risky because of structural disadvantages in the area of raising capital. This also
increases the competitive challenges that they face.
These organizations produce a lot of bulk mail and often look for finishing
options such as duplexing, tri-fold and booklet making options. Another good
idea is to focus on the documents and not the technology. Many of these groups
are somewhat technology adverse, however, will appreciate efficiency and cost
savings messages. Faxing is also still widely used.
Security is a moderate concern for these groups.
Try donating a print job to a non-profit organization with a “printed by” credit on it.
At the least it is inexpensive advertising and you might actually win a client or two.
