Chapter 11 Creating Virtual Machines Prerequisites n A supported guest operating system must be installed on the virtual machine. n You must have an ESX/ESXi license or be using evaluation mode to power on the virtual machine. Procedure 1 From the vSphere Client, right-click the virtual machine, select Power, and select Power On. 2 Click the Console tab to make sure that the guest operating system starts successfully, and log in if necessary. 3 Right-click the virtual machine, select Guest, and select Install/Upgrade VMware Tools. 4 Select Interactive Tools Installation and click OK. This step initiates the installation process by mounting the VMware Tools bundle on the guest operating system. 5 Do one of the following: n From the desktop, double-click the VMware Tools CD icon or the file manager window and double- click the RPM installer. n If the VMware Tools CD icon or file manager window does not appear, install VMware Tools from the command line. 6 When prompted, enter the root password and click OK. The installer prepares the packages. 7 Click Continue when the installer presents a dialog box that shows Completed System Preparation. When the installer is done, VMware Tools is installed. There is no confirmation or finish button. 8 In a terminal window, as root (su -), run the following command to configure VMware Tools: vmware- config-tools.pl Respond to the questions the installer displays on the screen. Press Enter to accept the default values if appropriate for your configuration. 9 Exit from the root account by issuing the exit command. What to do next Verify the status of VMware Tools by checking the VMware Tools label on the virtual machine Summary tab. The VMware Tools label should display the word OK. Before you install or upgrade VMware Tools on a virtual machine, determine the status of VMware Tools. Select the virtual machine and click the Summary tab. The VMware Tools label indicates whether VMware Tools is installed and current, installed and not current, or not installed.
