Page 175 highlights

Changing the Appearance of a Spreadsheet When placing the mouse pointer over the column border, the column resize tool is displayed. Resizing in this manner is not affected by locked titles, except in the case of the borders of columns which are entirely locked. These cannot be resized in this method as the pointer will not drag a change line. You may want to change the appearance of a spreadsheet to improve its presentation. For example, you might want to emphasize certain aspects with a different text style or alignment. This section explains how to do the following: S Adjust the width of columns and the height of rows S Change the alignment of information in cells S Change the text style of information in cells Adjusting Column Width and Row Height Sometimes when you enter information, it appears truncated or appears as ### because the column is not wide enough. You can change the column width using the mouse or the choices on the Cell menu. You can adjust column width and row height when titles are locked using the menu choices, and the areas of data in the locked area are changed also. However, it is not possible to change either attribute for entire rows or columns which are locked. To set the column width exactly, see the next section, "Formatting Spreadsheets" on page 163. A standard column is 64 points wide. A point is nearly 1/72 of an inch. "To change the column width by dragging: 1. Move the pointer to the header area at the top of the spreadsheet. When the pointer is over the divider that separates the column letters, it changes to a double arrow, as shown in the illustration at left. 2. Drag the column divider on the right side of the column until the column is the width you want. OR Double-click the column divider on the right side of the column to set the column width just wider than the longest entry in the column. This is the same effect you get if you choose Best Fit from the Cell menu. "To change the column width using the Cell menu: 1. Select a cell anywhere in the column whose width you want to change. 2. Select one of the following from the Cell menu: S Narrower makes the column 8 points narrower. The default width is 64 points. S Wider makes the column 8 points wider. The default width is 64 points. S Best Fit makes the column wide enough to fit the widest entry it contains. "To set a column width exactly: 1. Select the column for which you want to set the width. To do so, you can either click the column header or select a cell in the column. 2. Choose Column Width from the Cell menu. The dialog box at the left appears. 3. Changing the Appearance of a Spreadsheet
You may want to change the appearance of a spreadsheet to improve its

with a different text style or alignment.
This section explains how to do the following:
S
Adjust the width of columns and the height of rows
S
Change the alignment of information in cells
S
Change the text style of information in cells
Adjusting Column W
idth and Row Height
Sometimes when you enter information, it appears truncated or appears as
###
because the column is not wide enough. You can change the column
width using the mouse or the choices on the Cell menu.
"
To change the column width by dragging:
1. Move the pointer to the header area at the top of the spreadsheet.
When
the pointer is over the divider that separates the column letters, it changes
to a double arrow, as shown in the illustration at left.
2. Drag the column divider on the right side of the column until the column
is the width you want.
OR
Double-click the column divider on the right side of the column to
set the column width just wider than the longest entry in the
column. This is the same effect you get if you choose Best Fit from
the Cell menu.
"
To change the column width using the Cell menu:
1. Select a cell anywhere in the column whose width you want to change.
2. Select one of the following from the Cell menu:

the case of the borders of
columns which are entirely
locked. These cannot be resized
in this method as the pointer will
not drag a change line.
Y

row height when titles are locked
using the menu choices, and the
areas of data in the locked area
are changed also. However
