Cleaning the Print Head From time to time, you may need to clean the print head. You should clean the print head when the ink on the page looks splotchy or messy or when blank spaces appear on the page. "To clean the print head: Press CODE + INK CHG. The print head will move slightly to the left and then back to the right. Cleaning the Print Cartridge Nozzles, Contacts, and Bracket Contacts Do not use a paper towel for cleaning because it can leave tiny fibers that can clog nozzles and cover electrical contacts. "To clean the ink-jet cartridge nozzles and contacts: 1. If print quality does not improve after cleaning the print head, remove the ink-jet cartridge (see instructions on page 16). 2. Gently clean the entire copper-colored area, including the nozzles and contacts, with a clean cloth, dampened with water only. To dissolve any dried ink, hold the damp cloth against the nozzles for about three seconds. Gently blot and wipe dry. 3. Allow the copper-colored area to dry thoroughly. 4. Reinstall the ink-jet cartridge and press ENTER. Then press CODE + INK CHG and close the cover. "To clean the bracket contacts in the printer: 1. If print quality does not improve after cleaning the print head, ink-jet nozzles and contacts, press INK CHG to move the ink-jet cartridge bracket to the left side of the carriage. 2. Turn the power switch off. 3. Remove the ink-jet cartridges. (See page 16.) 4. Use a clean, dry cloth to clean the gold-colored contacts on the inside of the ink-jet cartridge bracket. 5. Install the ink-jet cartridge. 6. Turn the power switch on. 7. Press CODE + INK CHG and close the cover. If print quality has not improved after this cleaning process, replace your ink-jet cartridge. If print quality still does not improve, your printer may require service. Contact your local authorized Brother Service Center. Getting Started 18
