When you copy or cut a selection to the clipboard, it replaces whatever is currently on the clipboard. When you move a selection, you remove or cut it from its original location and paste it into another location. When you select text in the input line, you can cut it to move it or you can copy it to another place. The selection you copy or cut is placed on the clipboard, a temporary storage space. When you press PASTE or choose Paste from the Edit menu, the contents of the clipboard are pasted into the input line. When you paste an item into a document from the clipboard, the item also remains on the clipboard unless you replace it. So you can continue to paste the same item from the clipboard to multiple locations in your document. This table shows shortcut methods for keyboard editing: TO USE KEY Cut CUT Copy COPY Paste PASTE Delete DELETE "To cut (move) a selection in the input line: 1. Select the item or text you want to move. 2. Press CUT or choose Cut from the Edit menu. The item is removed from yourdocument and placed on the clipboard, replacing any item already there. 3. Move the insertion point to the location where you want the item to appear. 4. Press PASTE or choose Paste from the Edit menu. The contents of the clipboard are inserted into the document, and the pasted text appears at the insertion point. "To copy a selection: 1. Select the item or text you want to copy. 2. Press COPY or choose Copy from the Edit menu. The item remains in your document and also goes to the clipboard, replacingany other item on it. 3. Move the insertion point to the location where you want the item to appear. 4. Press PASTE or choose Paste from the Edit menu. The contents of the clipboard are inserted into the document. "To replace text: 1. Select the word or words you want to replace. 2. Type the replacement text. The new text replaces the original text. "To replace one block of text with another: 1. Select the block of text you want to replace the existing text. 2. Press COPY or choose Copy from the Edit menu. The text is placed on the clipboard. 3. Select the block of text you want to remove, and press PASTE or choose Paste from the Edit menu. The selection is replaced by the block you copied to the clipboard. Typewriter 299
