12 Desktop Reference W ith Desktop Reference, you can check spelling, find synonyms, check hyphenation, and jumble letter order to create new words (very handy in word games). You can also personalize your dictionary to include a User Dictionary containing words or abbreviations that you use frequently that would not be entries in a standard dictionary, such as the name of your company. Check Spelling If the word does not appear in the dictionary, the Suggestions box is displayed. "To check spelling, hyphenation & definition: 1. Click on the Desktop Reference icon on the Main Menu. The Desktop Reference application window appears. 2. Enter the word in the Word box. 3. Press ENTER or click on the Lookup icon on the tool bar. If the word is spelled correctly, Desktop Reference shows you proper hyphenation and gives you meanings with parts of speech. If the word is not in the dictionary,the Suggestions box appears. When you select a word from Suggestions, the new word is looked up automatically. 4. If the word has several meanings, you can use the scroll bars on the right of the Meaning(s) dialog box to see all of the meanings. 5. If the definition will not fit onto one line, you can see the complete meaning by selecting the meaning that you want to see. The full meaning appears in the Full Meaning box. Find Synonyms "To find synonyms: 1. Enter the word that you want to find synonyms for in the Word box. 2. Press ENTER or click on the Lookup icon. Look under the Full Meaning box to see a list of synonyms in the Synonym box at the bottom. 3. Select the appropriate sense (definition) of the word from the Meaning(s) box. 4. Look in the Synonyms box at the bottom of the screen to see a list of synonyms. 5. If you want to see hyphenation or definitions for one of the synonyms click on the button by the word.
