Function Description Example NOW ( ) Returns the current date (month, day, and year) and time (hour, minute, and second). You must enter the empty parentheses. The whole number represents the date as a serial number starting January 1, 1900. The decimal fraction portion of the number represents the time, beginning at midnight = 0. You must include the empty parentheses. =NOW() returns 33988.50 (January 20, 1993, 12 noon) if it is now 12 noon on January 20, 1993. SECOND (time value) Extracts the second from the time value serialnumber. The second is an integer from 0 to 59. Time serial numbers are decimal fractions and can be part of a date/time combination. If there is no fractional part, the time is midnight. You can use TIMEVALUE to convert text time. =SECOND(TIMEVALUE(11:58:45PM")) returns 45. =SECOND(29453.49) returns 36. TIME (hour, minute, Convertsa numerical time (hour, minute, second) and second) to the serial number format =TIME(12,34,23) returns 0.523877. TIMEVALUE (string) Convertsa time (in text format) to the serial =TIMEVALUE(1:10PM" ) returns number format 0.54861111. TODAY() Returns the current date (month, day, and year) =TODAY() returns 33988.00 if todays date from the serial number format is January 20. WEEKDAY (date value) Returns the number for the day from the serial number format for date value. The WEEKDAY returns a number representing the day of the week: 1 for Sunday, 2 for Monday, etc. Date value must be a serial number. Use DATEVALUE to convert dates entered as labels. =WEEKDAY(33988) returns 4 (Wednesday). =WEEKDAY(DATEVALUE(1/20/93")) returns 4 (Wednesday). (Sunday = 1,Saturday = 7) YEAR (date value) Returns the current year from the serial number format for the date_value. Date_value must be a serial number. Use DATEVALUE to convert dates entered as labels. =YEAR(33988) returns 93. =YEAR(DATEVALUE(1/20/93")) returns 93. Appendix 375
